Remember when this blog used to be a “home look” on Gunplas AND GFF? It seems like the GFF section is need of some maintenance and blog love and sooo… here’s a much needed complete re-review (with all-new photos) of the GFF Wing Gundam Early Type (Ver. Ka). This is also a great way to introduce it to those who never knew such a page/section ever existed on this blog. Eventually, I’ll start doing re-reviews (mainly taking new photos) of other GFF and older models too so their pages are a little more uniform with my current review format with the more recent models. I also owe you the following: HG 1/144 Seravee review, MG Acguy review, and Turn A battle. Depending on my free time, I’ll either work on Seravee or the battle photoshoot first…

I guess the number of increasing comments here have prompted you to re-review? ^^

The design of the Wing Ver. Ka is great, in my eyes. It really is a way to connect the Wing to the Wing Zero Custom which, if I understand correctly, is considered the “cannon” design at this point.
I’d like to see the rest of the AC Gundam’s get a GFF production, I like the Ver. Ka redesigns of the original 5.

*chuckle* I can’t believe I shamed you into doing it, especially since I was recently defending your old, inaccurate-but-good review. I just wanted to see new pictures to see what you’d do with it now. But, wow! That was quick!
November 10, 2009 at 1:29 PM
Chris, more like the comments that kept leading me to looking at the old pics that prompted me to re-review xD
Aptkane, yep. I’m a fan of the other Early Type Ver. Ka’s as well. More sleek, less bulk :D
Siroh, this was bound to happen sooner or later… considering the time it has been since the very first comment I made about redoing it xD

Glad that you’re updating old reviews with new pictures. Your photo set up has really improved :)
Looking forward to the MG Acquy review

Ah, good ol’ Wing Ver. Ka. Probably the only MSV Gundam that evaded my grasp. Unfortunately by the time I tried to decide which version to get I was too jaded by the flaws of either. The GFF line burned me out and the MG is barely more inviting, what with the old style hip ball joints and the massive amount of Ver. Ka labels…

AceWhatever: I didn’t hear much praise for NG Wing kits (I have two EW ones, one broken though). I saw your Photobucket page and some of your photos include the 1/144, 1/100, and 1/60 Wing Gundam Zero (Okawara/TV ver.) models. If you were bothered by flaws in an MG, why even consider an older NG (let alone multiple versions of) that might have even more? Is it the design of the mecha that’s appealing to you?
I don’t have a MG, let alone a 1/100 model yet, but I do have this GFF, and despite its flaws, I liked the design enough to want it. For similar reasons, I plan to get the Wing ver. Ka as my first (or second) MG, too.
And slightly unrelated, but just curious, I also noticed you had the MSiA version of WGZ, too. Is it a U.S. version, or later version that can transform? In either case, I’m wondering what you think about it and if you would recommend getting it.

gundamandeverythingelse, there’s a little gray “help” button in the upper right corner in your blog stat/dashboard page. You can find plenty of answers with the links provided. The nice thing about it is that the links are actually helpful! Happy blogging!
Ace, I can see the issue with the ver. ka decals (who doesn’t?), but what’s wrong with hip ball joints? ^^;
November 11, 2009 at 11:19 PM
yo, Z a little off topic but
I’ve been searching everywhere for an all glass showcase, like the ones you have. Do you remember where you got it? If not how much was it (not willing to spend 1000’s on a case for my models).
Thanks so much!
November 12, 2009 at 1:41 AM
I got it at IKEA. The shelf is called DETOLF. It’s only $60 ^^. You kinda get what you pay for though; I have a smaller completely glass one that cost me 100 but it is much sturdier and the glasses are thicker (it’s retail-floor grade).

Siroh: Haha you saw those. I need to take better photos of my Wing Zero collection someday. My first year of buying Gunpla was all about trying out different things from different lines of figures and kits. So again “by the time” I wanted a Wing Ver. Ka I was considering all kinds of variables like back-heaviness and ability to hold its rifle plus all the work it’d need. I might just break down and buy it someday, but only if like nothing else interesting comes out for like a whole year or something.
As for the MSIA, it’s the second one that transforms. This review here pretty much covers everything I could say about it. Only differences being that mine was panel-lined for some reason and that the reviewer’s figure had less saggier arms. You have to remember how MSIA’s have a reputation for over-sized accessories and consider that Wing Zero’s stuff was already huge to begin with…^_^;
Z: They’re just old and feel pretty limiting compared to the new MG’s. In fact this is pretty much a major reason why I’m not buying any MG that predates the RX-78 OYW Version anymore.
To demonstrate, let’s look at this pose that Freedom makes in ACE3:
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/ace/ace3-80.jpg
This is just moments before it goes into Hi-MAT mode and blows stuff up. Now look at that pose replicated by the MG:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/AceWhatever/Stuff/mecha/freedom3.jpg
That’s as far as I could get the legs to go. And you can see that they’re only split half as wide as the ones in the screenshot. If Freedom had Strike Freedom’s newer frame, it could have pulled that off near flawlessly.

November 12, 2009 at 1:51 PM

November 13, 2009 at 10:12 PM
Odd. I made a long comment since Thursday that isn’t appearing here at the office. I think it said something about waiting for moderation.
Can you clear it through, Z?
November 14, 2009 at 12:03 AM
Ace, did you use multiple links? Or was it unusually long (akin to some of my comments)? I never known for a comment that needed approval for the latter, but in the GFF section, I made a comment that had three links in it (originally going to be more), and it required moderation/approval.
November 14, 2009 at 1:01 AM
Both I guess.
I think people should be able to see it now.
November 14, 2009 at 1:14 AM
Thanks for letting me know ^^;. Long comments are no problem (just look at all the essays Siroh wrote) but wordpress automatically flags anything with more than two links. I’m gonna give that pose a try in a bit…
November 14, 2009 at 10:19 AM
Ace, I can buy the explanation given. But even though I’m spoiled with EMSiAs and an HGUC (though not by much since it’s a bulky GP02A with arms that can barely ever move without separating and needing reconnection), I go back to my GFF, NG 1/144, and older MSiAs a lot of the time.
As far as the MSIAs WGZ, I have the EMSiA WGZ ver. EW, and it can barely hold the twin buster rifle together, and the last time I tested it (before I accidentally lost one of the triggers months back), it couldn’t even hold the TBR separately. I have a better chance of getting my GFF Wing to hold its buster rifle on its own again (though I never changed its pose from that). The TBR for EMSiA WGZ is probably more proportionate than the MSiA TV versions of Wing and Zero.
I also have the U.S., panel line-deprived, non-transforming (and pink beam saber-wielding) version of Wing Gundam. The wings can still spread out fine, it can easily hold its big buster rifle, though by now after much usage over the early and late parts of this decade, its knee “joints” might be a bit iffy (and definitely so for my Tallgeese II MSiA, and for my Heavyarms ver. EW, even though it can’t spread out its legs much for a combative pose). It doesn’t have much articulation, though. Earlier versions of MSiAs only connected from one part of the MS “body” to another with a single hinge (not sure that’s the right term) instead of the two you can see on newer versions, like your WGZ.
Someone out there has modded it to get better articulation (and maybe stability), though:
http://blog.goo.ne.jp/somewhereinthenight/e/ebaf9b7b9c020b9f8ff2d06794defed1
Now even though I know one can’t get that out of the box, I might still get it, after watching many GvGN videos and waiting for GvGNP to come out… (I’m a sucker for winged units, sometimes.) If the U.S. MSiA (second) version has better stability though, I’m sure I’d be hard-pressed to find it. Where did you get yours, if I may ask?
November 14, 2009 at 10:24 AM
Oh, I almost forgot… How’s that essay, Z? :P
November 14, 2009 at 12:35 PM
I hear ya’. I was so hoping an HCM Pro version would come out when they announced the new Wing figures, but in this hobby patience is a virtue. :p
Anyway I got my MSIA waaaaaaaaay back in December ‘07 around the time it and the 1/60 kit were miraculously available at the same time from Hobby Link Japan. The MSIA’s out of stock at the moment, so I guess it’s not completely unobtainable right now if you’re lucky.
And while I’m at it, I got the 1/144 and 1/100 off of Tisinc99 from Amazon on April of last year back when they still had a ton of kits from the 90’s.
I was interested in tracking down the 1st edition MSIA Wing Zero for a while but I decided to only look forward rather than backwards in this hobby.
November 14, 2009 at 6:12 PM
Well, not necessarily a good thing since you’ll be passing up some items that might be worth getting (but I’m not you, so I can’t speak to your taste), however, unless you want your second version of Wing Zero to have a pink beam saber and keep the first for parts (if possible), I doubt there’s much value of having a first edition, unless you want to keep it in the box and then sell it for a thousand dollars a year later. I’m usually not that kind-of guy, though…
…In addition on the Wing front, I might also be on the lookout for some Leos (MSiA or model). That’s quite an underrated grunt MS, in my view. But, GvGNP aside, I got my eyes on the TAG 1/144s, for now. And some HGUCs (such as the Zakus, at least).
November 17, 2009 at 1:07 AM
Wow… to my own surprise, that WZ figure actually looks kinda good. Even the proportions. It reminds me of it in Endless Duel ^^. I remember my friend gave me a MSiA Heavyarms… the thing really was free of panel lines and it was just plain ugly xD.
