Burning Out?

Not really a WISP post but more like a “thought in process” thing. I am slowly sinking back into my old WISP habits again… I look at the parts, pick up a few pieces, put them together… and I become tired of it afterwards. Ever get that feeling where the project seems very far from completion and even something like inserting a PC part into a slot feels like a lot of effort?

Yea… I think I might need to take a little break for a bit and do something else for a change. Maybe a KR review or two would be refreshing…

P.S NK’s last post is out… I’ll read it when I get home later tonight.

NK wrote more of a book than a post. It sucks to think anyone would send hate mail to him especially over gunpla! Ngee, you will be missed!

  2. SwordsRCool Says:

Don’t let your hobbies become work. And NK’s last post made me sad. I will miss his blog.

This can apply generally, and I felt that way in a few other areas in life (even with recreational activities), but I haven’t in Gunpla. Currently, my Gunpla hobby is at an indefinite hiatus, but if I could, I would’ve continued it with my Kapool. And for all but two, I did a mostly-straight build of the Gunpla within an handful of hours with using markers or something similar for touch-ups.

My GP02a Type-MLRS–the first HGUC I have (with a broken arm and hands, currently), took two or three days to build on-and-off, with the reason for stopping being real life interruptions or hesitance because of such interruptions upcoming. If I decide to build my Kapool, it’d take two or three days even though it’s much easier than a GP02a model, because of the reasons why I couldn’t finish the GP02a in a day.

So, no; I haven’t had such burning out with Gunpla. But the hobby was (metaphorically) smashed to pieces for other reasons. I guess it’s because when I was in the hobby I was mainly building 1/144-scaled models. You’ve built many MGs and 1/100s, Z, and your interest is a more casual one than pros. I could understand from that viewpoint that a possible breather might be needed. The closest I’ve come to it is when I was re-touching my Turn A (which took two days initially because I didn’t know how to deal with the crappy white paint I was first using) and some parts got screwed up in the process… That, and my left thumb. (If I hold up my thumb to light, I think I can see the “markings” of my now-old wound.)

maybe u shud consider modding or painting gundams in a different color to bring sum spark back.

  5. ErazEr Says:

no wonder it looked like you were working on that leg for ages haha, take a break as it will look more frustrating if you force yourself

  6. beamknight87 Says:

    Needs MOAR Riders.

Read NK’s post a few hours ago. Wtf, to think people could go to such extents as to actually send him hate mails and stuff. I don’t blame the guy for closing his site for good

  7. Nyanerius Says:

Burning out? Nah. Getting tired of constantly building kits? Possibly. Trying to return to HGs after a few MGs? Most likely.
You’ve zoomed through a few Master Grades recently. I think the only thing you’re gonna have a lot of fun building is something with a runner count over 18, or just take a month off until your hands start to ache from lack of snipping, and get to an HG.
Happens to me sometimes. It’s only fun to build small-scale kits when you’ve been “starved” of either them or larger kits for a while.

  8. eyeshield30 Says:

i hope you won’t stop this blog Z, NK closing is this month sad news for me…

  9. CKai Cydek Says:

It doesn’t seem like ‘burning out’ as much as it is having too much of a good thing. Variety is the spice of life, after all. If one hobby starts to bore you, try another. Play a game, perhaps. Or maybe rather than BUILD kits, try PHOTOGRAPHING THEM again. There are some reviews you wished to get back to and improve with better pictures, yes?

  10. Atom Says:

ya nk mad me sad. dont leave us z. your my last hope.
    BTW
im getting DS ew it should be here at the end of the week

  11. Jesta Says:

If you don’t feel like working on it, then it’s best to stop for a while, pick it up later if you’re in a good mood or something. Don’t leave it for too long, my HG Unicorn has been lying around headless and armless for over a month now.

  12. Busterbeam Says:

you’ll be reading for a while. its a LONG post. know what you mean about feeling burnt out. been there tons of times.

  13. Lelouch Says:

Oh dear god please don’t quit Gunpla…it sounds like ur getting fed up with it…kinda like if you do something for too long you’ll get tired and bored of it…we just lost NK, so I’m relying more on this blog to keep me up to date on Gunpla stuff…I mean there are plenty of good Gunpla blogs out there, but most are in jap., which I can’t read…

Take your time Z. Doesn’t matter how long it takes, just so long as you enjoy it. Heck, do a bit of Kamen Rider for a while or go play a video game for a bit…whatever gets you back in a more “Gunpla-istic” mood.

  14. Rob Says:

Z, definitely know how you feel, especially with having a lot of things like school and a cold happening at the same time. Still, don’t hesitate to take a step back and relax! While I couldn’t build for a couple of months, the break was very good for me, and while I won’t be going gung ho going forward, I think I’ve learned that taking breaks, be it a day, week, or month, helps prevent me just getting tired of it. And lastly, don’t let the readers get to you, I think we all get those days where we think “man, I got to get some content up!” and push ourselves harder than we should. Just remember it’s your blog, and do what you want!

With that said, I tried to read Ngee’s last post on my commute to work today and couldn’t finish it. And here I thought my posts were long! It’s a shame honestly though, because not to bash the guy, but here is his first true “rant” and he brings up good points, but I kind of feel they are dulled because he is also making it his last. If he would have taken the time to drop some subjective rants from time to time, I think he wouldn’t have burned out, if you can call it that, like this. Still, he has also put himself on a pedestal as well, by claiming he is impartial and he likes all things equal, and what not. In a way, he’s saying everyone else sucks because they aren’t as good as him. In that point I felt kind of disappointed.

Most of what he complains about are things that really… do we care? UC versus Alternate Universe, HG, MG, PG, what’s next in the model kits, complaining about price. It comes with the territory, and comes with everything in life. Be it video games, schools, companies, what not, you see the same fierce loyalty, debate, and even hate. I get the feeling though he’s taken it really personal though, and again, I’m disappointed with that, because that is part of the fun of it as well, and learning to deal with that is just part of life.

Still, we all judge and for what parts I don’t like, there are others that I do like, respect and are amazed at. I truly find it amazing, yet sad at the same point that he made some 2000+ posts this year, some 270 posts a month. That’s just mind boggling for one person to do. Amazing yes, sad though, because what else is there?

Overall, I’m going to miss the updates and news, but he was kind enough to list his sources, and I’m sure someone will pick up the slack. Who knows, maybe he’ll come out of “retirement” as well, when he feels that we are worthy of it.

    • madmoz Says:

Wait Rob. You speak and read japanese right? You like gunpla and other ‘hobby’ stuff right? You blog too and unlike Ngee Khiong who comes from my part of the woods, you actually live in Japan…

eheheheh time to ‘power up’ your blog perhaps?

      • Rob Says:

Haha, I won’t lie and say I hadn’t thought about “powering” up at one point… But, I notice recently that the trend for news flashes and scoops is coming out of places like Korea and China first, rather than Japan! So I doubt I could give people scoops, outside of actual accurate information when it comes to Japanese announcements. For example the ANA Gundam thing, which is 1 card per flight, that allows you to order 3 of each kit. But, for most people that info doesn’t really matter if you can’t fly ANA here!

In the long run though, I just don’t have the amount of time the NK had. I mean, I read the interview of him that was up on the sites, and it seems all that he did was write for his site, outside of his teaching… You all know that it’s a good week to get 3 posts from me, couldn’t imagine doing 10 a day! Especially with my new job and upcoming business trips I’m actually going to be around less maybe. (China, Singapore and Boston, here I come!) That reminds me, I need to update my about page…

But I digress, no matter what though, I’ll still post all those neat little things I find here in Japan, home of Gunpla, going forward, rest assured.

  15. Static Says:

Yeah… NK’s put alot of thought into his last post. It’s one heck of a read actually, and really long, so I suggest getting a snack if your going to read it all in one sitting.

Anyways, onto this post. Feeling burnt out is natural, since your doing this for a more casual reason than others. It’s perfectly natural to become tired from this, I mean, you HAVE just shifted to high gear and zoomed through 3 MGs and 1 HG in about 2 weeks time. Just… do something other than gunpla (like some more KR stuff).

  16. madmoz Says:

NK comes across as being real tired, and kinda naive. Gonna miss his blog though.

  17. Z Says:

Woah… Didn’t mean to scare or worry anyone with this post… or at least I didn’t mean to come off sounding so serious ^^;. I guess everyone must be feeling down after reading NK’s post and this post was a bit of a “bad timing” ^^;. Sorry! I’ll be fine… thanks! :)

Reading NK’s semi-autobiographic post at the moment… then I gotta write up a essay for class…then a response post…then I’ll get back to all of you hopefully within 24 hours from now ^^;.

    • divinelight Says:

well, I think not just me that get down because of Ngekhiong’s post.

still in not in good mood of even working right now, nor I realize how this happenings could affect me in real life.

still, your blog is the first place I opened up back then in December, even before I knew Ngeekhiong. so, just keep on blogging ^^

  18. rndm Says:

    I know what you mean since I built one of my Gunplas while I was fairly tired (though enthusiastic to build it) until I had to stop myself after a while since I made too many painting mistakes in the end. ^^;

I haven’t built anything in a while, partly due to some games coming out and a recent console purchase, but as others have said it is nice to do other stuff once in a while.

Just read NK’s long post as well. Had to speed read it since I don’t really have the time currently but I finally understood why he ended his blog. Pretty sad how some people could retaliate in such a way. The ironic thing is how Gundam is about peace and understanding each other some more…

Oh, how are you holding up now? Feeling better?

  19. Cat Says:

too much on building gunplas can be hazardous on your health, mind, and wallet.

take a break for a while Z, and do your homework, or get fun with the KR and miku nendo~

when you have your free time, and spirit to construct it, then you might resume the pla works.

  20. TheOneNOnly Says:

    Sigh.
    Ngee Khiong was Gunpla’s Moses.
    He lead us to…
    Spoilers.

Very good spoilers so we could work hard, save our money, and get the Gunpla we want at the expected date.
